New technology to detect movement of Drones in Airports

The developers say say they have tested the radar and it showed a high capability in differentiating between moving objects like trees, birds and Drones.

Airport authorities are worried at the rate at which Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)-Drones are obstructing aircraft’s from landing.

According to BBC, various incidents where Drones almost caused accidents have occurred in the past. Richard Westcott reports that sometime last year, a Drone got very close to an airline that was landing at the Heathrow Airport.

Also, Manchester Airport reportedly closed its runways, when it heard that a Drone was flying nearby.

To curb Airplanes from hitting drones, a company has come out with an innovative radar technology that will track the movement of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)-Drones.

Plextek Consulting , the developers of the radar say they have tested the radar and it showed a high capability in differentiating between moving objects like trees, birds and Drones.

Paul Martin, chief technology officer, Plextek, said: “Working with DSTL has been a great opportunity to prove and highlight the performance of our patented radar technology, with clear results revealing there is an innovative, cost-effective way to detect low-cost UAS.”

He also said: 'Once fully developed, this can be applied with both homeland defence and commercial domains, by the provision of local airspace monitoring and enhancement to the safety of UAS operation.'
