Artist reveals first permanent sculpture in the US

The artist, singer and song writer has just unveiled her first permanent sculpture in the US at Jackson Park, Chicago.

The piece was unveiled on Monday, October 17, 2016.

The sculpture, titled Skylanding is Yoko Ono's first permanent US installation. The sculpture consists of 12 stainless steel petals and each is as tall as 12 feet.

The sculpture is situated in Jackson Park, the location where the Barack Obama presidential library will be.

The location of the sculpture is quite important to Ono because of the history she has with the place. Chicago is the inspiration of the last song she wrote with John Lennon, '', before he died in 1980.

The location is also symbolic because it's relevant to Ono's peace campaign and the sculpture is placed very close to the place the pavilion was razed down back in 1946.

Yoko Ono said to Chicago Tribune: “The lotus represents hope, rebirth and spiritual awakening. Soon after I first visited the site in 2013, I began to imagine such a lotus rising from the ashes of the lost Phoenix. Today, I see the lotus as a universal symbol of peace and embodiment of all of our greatest hopes and aspirations."

The sculpture is located at the entrance to the Garden of the Phoenix. The garden is a Japanese garden in Jackson Park.

The Phoenix Pavilion was a gift from Japan to the United States during the 1893 World’s Fair and it used to be in the garden.
