How to survive without cooking

Cooking is a skill EVERYONE should have, whether they’re male or female. Why? Because we all have to eat. Everyone belongs in the kitchen. Why? Because that’s where food is.

Foods that don't require cooking

As long as you’re the only one who has to eat your concoctions. The problem arises when you have to feed someone else’s child with your less than palatable dishes.

If you live in Lagos and work a regular 9-5 job, cooking will be a challenge, even if your culinary skills are the best. Why? Lagos traffic will not let you be great, you’d probably be outside your house, and kitchen more than you’ll be in it. So that’s that.

Here are six meals that will prevent you from starving to death. All six meals require next to no cooking.

1. Cereal

Your breakfast is sorted is you stock up on cereal. Fill your cupboard with different types; cornflakes, golden morn, coco pops etc. best part? You can stock up on ‘healthy’ cereal like oats and Weetabix that are rich in fiber and will improve your metabolism.

2. Bread

Bread is your best friend. Especially since you can eat it in different ways; bread and eggs, bread and butter, bread and mayonnaise, bread and jam, bread and moinmon, bread and akara, bread and beans (the last three you can buy from the nearest frying spot or mama put).

Point is, bread has never failed anyone, you can eat bread five days a week, just stock up on tea/coffe to wash it down.

3. Indomie

If you can’t successfully cook Indomie, then I don’t feel sorry for you and you actually don’t deserve food.

Not only does Indomie have a great taste, it is super easy to cook. In five minutes, your meal is ready. Cooking it is basically just putting the contents of the sachet in boiling water and taking the pot off heat after a few minutes.

4. Gala

Actually the ideal combo is Gala and Lacasera. Together, the snack and the drink are the ultimate Lagos traffic survival kit. I already said that you’d spend half of your life in Lagos traffic, if you don’t want to die of hunger in the process, call the nearest hawker and fill your stomach with this ‘delicacy’.

5. Garri

When it is not being made into eba, garri is a delicacy on its own. All it needs is water, although you can add beverage and groundnut if you wish.

Garri has gotten a lot of people through dark periods of hunger, starting from secondary school, and I am happy to inform you that it is still as reliable as ever.

6. Fruits

I am not going to rehash the importance of including fruits in your diet. We all know that they contain vitamins that boost your immune sysyem.

And if you’re looking to shed a few pounds, you’d need to eat a lot of fruits. Just get fresh fruits from your local market, a bowl of fruit salad is a complete meal on its own.
