7 foodstuff you shouldn't refrigerate

Although we consider the fridge as a safe haven for foods, there are some food items that shouldn't find their place in the refrigerator just so the nutrients are preserved.

Foods that shouldn't be stored in the fridge

While we like to think of the fridge as a safe storage zone for all things food and drinks, there are a good number of food items that should not find a place in your refrigerator.

Although putting these foods in the fridge wouldn't cause any major harm but then you'd suffer a flavourless and a bit of tasteless food. To avoid losing the delicious, fresh and sweet taste that comes with certain foods, here are some foods that shouldn't be kept in the fridge.

1. Watermelon

Watermelons are best stored outside the fridge. Once refrigerated, they tend to break down and become powdery and grainy. So to keep the flavour intact, melons need to be stored at room temperature. However, after cutting, you should store the melons in the fridge for three to four days. Besides according to a USDA research, storage at room temp might help keep the antioxidants more intact.

2. Tomatoes

Storing tomatoes in the fridge disrupts the texture and makes the tomato mealy because of the cold temperature.

3. Onion

The moisture of the fridge softens the onions and become mushy especially when left in the fridge for too long. Besides, cut onions tend to engulf the location it’s currently in with its smell. You really don't want your entire fridge smelling like onion.

4. Potatoes

The cold temperature of the fridge breaks down the starch in potatoes and leaves you with a sweet or gritty potato, which rarely tastes good no matter what you do with it.

5. Bread

When left at room temperature for too long, bread can growth mould, but refrigeration will dry it out. So, if you've got more bread than you can finish, you can store in the refrigerator, but be sure to toast it the next time you want to eat it, that way you'd easily enjoy the crunchy taste that comes with a sandwich.

6. Honey
