With the hustle and bustle that comes with earning a living, sleep is the one thing that often gets sacrificed in the mix of things.

The average adult ideally should get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep and when we come short of this, we are inevitably causing some serious wear and tear to the body.

So, do you constantly feel tired? Are those eye creams no longer working for the bags under your eyes? These are more are why you really should get more sleep.



  1. Improved memory: Research has shown that while asleep, you can strengthen memories or practice skills learned while awake. Simply put if you're trying to learn something new, you perform better after sleeping. This is why power naps are recommended in the middle of the day as they help recharge the batteries.

  2. Reduces risk of high blood pressure: Notice how worn out you feel when you don't get enough sleep? Sleep controls cholesterol levels and when you don't get enough, it's bad for the state of health, specifically the heart. Research shows that C-reative protein  which is associated with heart risk is higher in people get fewer hours of sleep. Need we say more?

  3. Boosts creativity: When you're well rested, the brain generally performs faster which in turn affects creativity. According to research done in Harvard University and Boston College, people  strengthen the emotional components of a memory during sleep, which may help spur the creative process.

  4. Helps weight loss: According to research, sleep and metabolism are controlled by the same sectors of the brain,so when you are sleepy, certain hormones go up in your blood, and those same hormones drive appetite. What better excuse is there to get more sleep?

  5. Reduces stress: When you're well rested, you're less likely to feel stressed and also make better informed decisions. Plus it also reduces the chances of accidents happening as many a road accident results from an unrested, stressed out driver.
