Youths beat up Borno lawmaker over poor performance
A lawmaker in Borno State almost lost his life after angry youths attacked him using dangerous weapons over his poor performance.
Vanguard reports that Banga who represents Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area in House of Assembly escaped death after a mob attacked him at one of the centers for the ongoing continuous voter's registration in the town.
Confirming the incident, the Caretaker Chairman of the council, Babangida Peta, said it took the intervention of security operatives to rescue the lawmaker from the mob who were reportedly armed with cutlasses, knife, sticks and other dangerous weapons.
Peta stated that Hon. Banga was rushed to the nearby Gombe Federal Medical Centre where he is recuperating following the serious injuries he sustained in the attack by the angry youths who felt he had abandoned them after getting their votes two years ago.
Peta said that he had traveled from Kwaya Kusar to Gombe to sympathize with the lawmaker, adding that the incident will be investigated and the culprits brought to book.
“Youths beat up one of our stakeholders and lawmaker, Saleh Banga. I was with him in the hospital at Gombe Federal Medical Centre this morning (Tuesday).
I am happy to inform you that he is responding to treatment. I have constituted an investigative committee; anyone who is behind this ugly incident will be investigated and, if found guilty, will surely face the law.”
This is not the first time lawmakers will be attacked by their constituents following their perceived inactivity since they were voted into power.
Some months ago, the member representing Paiko Federal Constituency of Niger State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Salihu Adamu, almost lost his life after youths in his constituency descended on him, beating him to stupor during a political meeting.
