Man in prison custody for killing in-law over cigarette

A 21-year-old man who stabbed his brother-in-law to death over a stick of cigarette has been remanded in prison custody in Edo.

According to Daily Trust, Igbineyi was ordered remanded by an Evboriaria Magistrate’s Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State, for stabbing Blessing Obazee, to death following an argument.

The police prosecutor in the case, Inspector Oluwaseun Olatoye, had earlier told the court that Igbineyi committed the offence on September 3, 2016, at No 40, Enoruwa Street, off Upper Sakponba Road, Benin, after the victim refused to give him a stick a cigarette.

Olatoye said the accused who was staying with the victim, stabbed Obazee several times in the stomach with a knife leading to his death.

“On that fateful day, the deceased (Obazee) refused to give the accused person the cigarette he was smoking, and later the accused person went to buy his own.

When the accused brought his own cigarette to the house, Obazee insisted that he (Igbineyi) should not smoke in his room and went further to collect the cigarette from the accused and put it off."

The prosecutor added that angered by the action of the victim, Igbineyi immediately took a knife and stabbed Obazee several times.

While ruling on the case, the Chief Magistrate, Caroline Oghuma, said it was not within the court’s jurisdiction and directed that the file be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

She therefore ordered that the accused be remanded at the Oko Medium Security Prison in Benin pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, while the case was adjourned to November 18, 2016, for further mention.
