Police operatives from the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Abuja, on Saturday, February 13, stormed the scene of a same sex wedding that was supposed to hold at the King’s Land Hotel located at the Jiwa Community in the FCT and disrupted what would have turned out to be the first official gay wedding in the country.

The gay wedding was supposed to be between Ibrahim Lawal (husband) and Umar Tahir (wife), both from Kaduna State

It was learnt that the police acted on intelligence report about the gay wedding and stormed the venue and made sure it was stopped since such a union is illegal in the country.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), ASP Anjuguri Manzah, said the command received an intelligence report and swiftly moved to the venue of the event to stop the marriage from holding.

“We acted based on the provisions of the Same-Sex Prohibition Act signed into law in 2013.

We received an intelligence report and acted fast by moving to the venue of the event to stop it.

We arrested the intending couple, Ibrahim Lawal and Umar Tahir, as well as the sponsors of the wedding and the owner of the hotel where the event was billed to hold.”

Manzah said the police were investigating the case and would charge the couple and other persons involved in the ceremony to court.

Same Sex marriage is a crime in Nigeria after the Federal Government signed into the the Same-Sex Prohibition Act in 2013.

Anyone who enters into a same sex marriage contract or civil union commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 14 years imprisonment.
