66-yr-old driver commits suicide over salaries

A 66-year-old company driver has committed suicide after being frustrated with life due to his unpaid salaries from his company.

Punch reports that Ekue's body was found hanging from the ceiling of his apartment on Oki Lane, in the area, around 8pm on Monday, August 22, 2016.

The victim, a driver for a paint manufacturing company in the state, it was gathered, was bitter over the failure of the company to pay his five months backlog of salaries.

He was said to have complained to his friends and family members that he had been facing tough times April 2016, when he stopped going to the company, and all efforts to collect his salaries which were put at N30,000 per month proved abortive.

He then found it difficult to fend for himself and his family, leading to his frustration that triggered the suicide.

A resident of the area who identified himself as Simon Davies, said the man's son, identified as IK, was the one who always came around to support him with money and food items and was even around the day the incident happened.

“His son had gone to buy food for him that evening. But when he returned, he saw his father’s body dangling from a rope and he raised the alarm. People went into the room to help rush him to a hospital, but he died."

"The main cause of the incident is the non-payment of his salaries by a paint company he worked for as a driver. I learned he earned N30,000 monthly and the company owed him five months’ salaries.

He stopped going there in April when the arrears were not paid. Since then, his son had been feeding him with the little he earns at a boutique where he works.”
