Fear spread among the populace when the news was received that the Ebola virus had landed in Nigeria.
First Lady, Governors Lead The Way As Nigerians Develop New Greeting Methods
The spread of the Ebola virus has necessitated the creation of a new greeting form which does not involve touching
Experts have said that the disease can be stopped as long as the spread is stopped. For this, it has been advised that people maintain proper hygiene and try to avoid unnecessary physical contact especially through handshakes.
Political leaders in Nigeria have decided to spearhead the move for less hand shaking as some state governors, Theodore Orji of Abia, Willie Obiano of Anambra and Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, chose to greet one another with their fists after an emergency meeting on Ebola with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja.
The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, also chose this method of greeting when she arrived at the Gdansk Walesa International Airport in Sopoto, Northern Poland to commission a training ship built for the Nigerian Oceanographic Institute for Marine and Research purposes.
Nigerians should refrain from panicking but ensure that they take all necessary measures to protect themselves. Spread the word, not the virus!
