A police officer has been arrested for selling a baby kept in her custody

A female police sergeant attached to the Akinpelu Police Division of the Lagos State Command, Adesuwa Obotie, has been arrested by the X-Squad Section of the Command, for her complicity in the alleged sale of a 1-week-old baby boy retrieved from his mentally deranged mother and brought to the station.

According to the reports in the Punch, the Edo State born Obotie was in charge of the baby and his mother, identified as Toyin, who were brought to the station by a good Samaritan after Toyin was delivered of the baby at a psychiatric hospital in the state and being on duty, the baby was handed over to Obotie.

But trouble reared its head when, on Monday, November 9, the mother stormed the station demanding for her baby, but Obotie reportedly denied knowing anything about the woman and her baby and was on the verge of sending her away after she had made a lot of trouble, when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), intervened and invited the sergeant and the mother to his office for interrogation.

After a lot of questioning with the mother insisting it was Obotie that collected her baby, she was said to have caved in and confessed to her boss that she actually received the baby but had sold him.

She told the DPO that she had taken the baby to her village in from where she sold him to a family in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

It was gathered that Obotie had also failed to record the incident in the crime diary of the station when she was handed the baby, with the intention of keeping it hidden.

She was subsequently arrested and taken to the Area F command, Ikeja, from where she was later transferred to the X-Squad Section. The command has however traced the buyers to their base in Port Harcourt where the baby has been retrieved.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joe Offor, confirmed the case and the arrest of the sergeant, adding that investigation was ongoing and she would be charged to court if found culpable.

“The sergeant was arrested in connection with a stolen baby boy. Investigation is ongoing.”
