Police nab 4 car thieves in Lagos

The four suspects were apprehended by men of the Anti-Robbery Squad in early January. They detailed their mode of operations during an interview with pressmen.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Lagos State Police Command has arrested four suspected car thieves responsible for several cases of car theft in different areas of Lagos.

Bright Ekeocha, Aziza Akobu and Adebayo Peter all members of a gang who steal cars in Lagos and sell them to buyers in Cotonou, Benin Republic, were rounded up at the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos on Monday, January 5.

According to police, one of the arrested suspects Raoul Dedavi, a Beninoise car dealer based in Cotonou, is one of the alleged receivers of the vehicles stolen by the gang. He was arrested by SARS a few days later at his hideout in Cotonou. A stolen Toyota Venza was recovered during his arrest.

According to , 45-year old Raoul Dedavi revealed that he started selling stolen cars in 2012 after he was approached by car thieves from Lagos.

He explained that he sells the cars and give the Lagos robbers their own percentage. He also revealed that he doesn’t sell cars stolen in Nigeria back to the country but to other West African countries.

“I went into all this because of greed. I am very repentant now” he told Punch.

Bright Ekeocha who says he is from Owerri North, Imo State, Aziza Akobu who is from Orlu, Imo State and 38-year-old Peter from Modakeke, Osun State all confessed in an interview with the newspaper to stealing cars and selling them to car dealers in Benin Republic.

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the arrest and also revealed that the Toyota Venza recovered from one of the suspects was stolen from a certain Thomas Nwaonicha, who is a car dealer at Kilometer 52, Lagos-Ibadan Expresssway. He had reported the matter at the Area H Command, Ogudu.
