Robbery suspect says he repented before his arrest

An armed robbery suspect who escaped from prison has been rearrested but he says he is now a born again Christian.

Banji Adedayo

An armed robber suspect and jail breaker who was rearrested by the Ondo State Police Command, Banji Adedayo, told the police that he is now a born again Christian after he had allegedly repented from armed robbery before he was arrested for a crime he had committed some years ago.

Adedayo, according to the police, was one of the prisoners who escaped from the Ado-Ekiti Prison during a jail break in 2014 and was rearrested few weeks ago.

The now 'born-again' criminal said that he was arrested while smoking Indian hemp at the back of his house in Akure, the state capital, along with another prison escapee, Tope Daramola, but said that since he escaped from prison, he had been living a low profile life, having parted ways with crime.

Adedayo also said that he tried to make a decent living by becoming a commercial motorcyclist before he was picked by the police for armed robbery.

But the state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Eke, punctured holes in Adedayo's claims, saying he and others were actually involved in another case of robbery after they escaped from prison.

Eke said that on March 12, a case of armed robbery was reported by a resident where it was reported that a gang of robbers numbering about five, armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, robbed a man of his Toyota Sienna bus, five assorted mobile phones and other valuables.

The police chief said the men of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) swung into action, adding that the forensic analysis carried on the phone led to the arrest of Adedayo and the other escapees.
