Armed robbery suspects implicates police officer as gun supplier

A suspected armed robbery suspect has told the police that a senior police officer is the gun supplier for his gang.

Joel Ojo and his gang

A Chief Superintendent of Police attached to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, identified simply as Muhammed, has been implicated by a suspected armed robbery suspect who was arrested by the police in Lagos, as being the one who supplied the gang with the guns and ammunitions they used during their operations.

The suspect, Joel Ojo who also paraded himself as a police officer, according to the police, was the leader of a five-man gang that has been terrorising residents of Lagos and other states in the South-West.

When they were arrested at the Abbatoir area, in Agege, Lagos, on Monday, September 28 at 11pm, a fake police Identity Card was recovered from him as well as two pump-action rifles, two pistols with several cartridges, and a police uniform in the gang's operational vehicle.

During interrogation, the 58-year-old Ojo, however, claimed he was a security man and was taking the rifles for repair, adding that he was a close friend of the CSP.

He added that he got the fake police I.D. card and guns from Muhammed when he started the security work.

“We were arrested at about 11pm for driving against the traffic. The guns were in my car and I was taking them for repair. I am not the owner of the guns. I started to use the police I.D. card and the guns early this year. I work as a security man.

The guns were given to me by CSP Muhammed. He is my friend and had also worked as a Divisional Police Officer. He knew I was a security man and he said I should have them. His name is CSP Muhammed attached to the Force headquarters, Abuja.”

But a police source narrated otherwise.

“They are actually a robbery gang. They were driving against the traffic in the Abbatoir area when the DCP’s boys stopped them for a search.

In the end, two pump-action rifles and two pistols were found in the vehicle. The DCP immediately ordered that the vehicle be kept in Abbatoir division.

The police officer they named has been called for questioning. Everybody was shocked that he had a strong link with the robbery gang.”
