A 15-year-old who is seeking admission into the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has lost one eye after his stepmother flogged him in June.

The teenager, identified as Bolu in a Punch report, was allegedly beaten by his father's second wife, Esther Modupe, on the 16th of June, at their rented apartment located in the Onipanu area of Lagos state.

Reports say the cane mistakenly hit his left eye while she was reprimanding him for coming back home late from church.

The eye became swollen and worsened over the course of a month, despite being treated at a private hospital, until he became partially blind.

One of the neighbors, told Punch that Modupe has been a good stepmother to Bolu and his sibling, despite having no children of hers.

“The woman worked as a private school teacher, and she was very nice to Bolu and his younger brother," he said.

"The two also liked her, and you will not even know they were not her children.

"But it turned out that on that day that she was angry and flogged the boy. The cane hit him in the eye."

The source added that Bolu's mother, who had left their father 10 years ago, returned to take him after the incident.

“They initially thought it was a small thing. But it turned out to be a big problem," he added.

"The mother then showed up and took him away.”

gathered that Bolu is one of the candidates for UNILAG's 2015 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) test scheduled to from Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th of August.

Another testified to the cordial relationship between the victim and his stepmother.

Bolu is a cool-headed boy, and he loved the woman too," the source told Punch.

"Esther too was close to the children. She taught them lessons, and bought clothes for them."

Student Pulse gathered that Modupe has been arrested and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team is facilitating rehabilitation for the teenager.
