New University of Ibadan VC is strict, "doesn’t break the rule" — Pro-Chancellor

President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to focus on educating Nigeria's women, youths and physically challenged persons.

The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, is a strict but accommodating person says the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Ibadan,  DR. UMAR MUSA MUSTAPHA.

Speaking with The News following Olayinka's emergence as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the institution, Mustapha said he does not compromise.

"By my judgment, he is a very humble, social and accommodating person," the Pro-Chancellor said.

"One interesting thing is that he keeps to the rules of the game.

"He is strict with the issue of plagiarism, procedure and rules.

"He doesn’t break the rule but bridge it.

"He interacts well but never compromise on what the law says."

Mustapha noted that Olayinka's outstanding qualities and contributions to the university helped him beat five other professors in the race to replace Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole.

"Olayinka stood out clearly because, first, he was a former deputy vice chancellor academics, dean, sub-dean, HOD, who has many local and international papers.

"He is a successful manager of resources and people in the university.

"He is a fellow of great institutions who has attracted grants to the university."

The Pro-Chancellor noted the success of the selection exercise was due to the fairness in the process.

"I attribute my success to God and the fact that we stood firm on the issues of integrity, fair play and justice,” he added.

"I am highly honored to be part of this exercise."

Olayinka,  takes over the reins of the university on the 1st of December 2015 as Adewole's tenure ends on the 31st of November.

gathered that the new Vice Chancellor had his first degree in Geology at UI between 1977and 1981 and returned to the institution as a Lecturer Grade II in 1988, becoming a professor in 1999.

He is a member of many learned societies.
