NANS threatens Gov Ganduje for "desquamating over 2000 menial workers"
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has asked Kano Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to reinstate the over 2000 workers laid off from the state's workforce or face student action.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by NANS Public Relations officer, Southwest Nigeria zone, Comrade Olatinwo Jeremiah, the union expressed its dissatisfaction with the decision and vowed to take action if the decision is not reversed.
"The National Association of Nigeria Students frowns and expresses strong distaste at the unwholesome and fibrillate approach of the Kano State government towards frugalism and probity by desquamating over 2000 menial workers from its workforce," the statement read.
"This is unacceptable and unsatisfactory."
Jeremiah noted that the governor's action is antithetic since he recently underlined the need to tackle problems facing the northern region “like almajeri, educational and economic backwardness and unemployment.
"Laying off unskilled workers who are helping families one way or the other is not a solution to these problems - instead, they worsen it."
NANS called on Ganduje to "recall these persons and also expedite action in absorbing them into the state's civil service so they can also enjoy the minimum wage policy" or face student action against him.
"NANS, being the hope of the common and the voice of the voiceless masses, Nigerians students won't hesitate to seize and beseige the Kano State Government secretariat if in 14 days this is not done.
"The welfare of the people is the greatest law and Nigerian students will always be at the vanguard of fighting for this cause."
NANS is the apex body representing Nigerian students.
