Varsity closed after students protest lack of water

According to Thenation, the school had be deserted and students sent home pending invitation to continue with their truncated second semester which started in April, 2016.

The college's provost, Dr. Gimba Abbas said the College would remain closed until management does its assessments, meet and decide on way forward which he said would take three weeks.

Abbas confirmed that there were some casualties during the uprising.

He said about six students were affected, five of them being asthmatic were affected by the police teargas while the other got a bullet wound.

“We are in a fasting period. In the morning, there will be no water to cook or do ablution for prayers. In the evenings, it is the same thing; we don’t get water to prepare something to break the fast.

“I was in my hostel I heard voices from the other block, ‘we no go gree, we no go gree’. Before you know it, everyone joined. Now we have been told to go home” they said.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Gombe Command, Ahmed Usman said there was no casualty but confirmed the injury of a staff of the institution who was pelted by the students.

He said about 100 students were apprehended in connection with the crises and they were immediately released to their Dean of Students Affairs after their statements were taken.
