The VC got suspended, so the staff threw a party to celebrate

From all the word going around, he will not be missed at all.

This photo is for illustrative purposes but we imagine this is how they were dancing.

In 1998, after the death of Sani Abacha, many Nigerians were celebrating the death of the former Head of State. We thought it'd be the last time.

But now, staff of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) are celebrating the suspension of their Vice chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole.

The Federal Government  suspended the Vice chancellor last week over a series of allegations and investigations on maladministration and financial malpractices.

By 11.00am, open grounds were already filled in this school with staff unions on the ground, ready to turn up to the Prof's shutdown.

This party, Daily Times gathered, was jointly organised by the Joint Action Congress (JAC). They didn't just show up for the party. They dressed the part.

"End to tyranny in FUNAAB. Honestly, we have every course to have this party. We experienced a period of authoritarian leadership that has never been in the over 20 years existence of this university."

That's what the chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU FUNAAB), Rotimi Fasuwon said of the VC's removal.

Part of this symbolic activity going on at the venue is the frying of ‘akara’ which in Yoruba culture is done to celebrate the passage of a dead one.

So basically, the VC is dead to them.

But how bad was he?

Really, really bad. According to a student we spoke to.

"All he did was promote his own people and ignore staff," the student said.

The student went on:

"Everyone hasn't been happy with him cause his tenure is easily one of the baddest there has been. The whole school calendar being upside down for the longest time. Robbers have been terrorizing us staying off campus and there wasn't any official statement or reassurance given to the students, a lot of hostels were robbed, students beaten and raped but the school was quiet."

Apparently, his tenure was supposed to end in May, but they wanted to make sure there would be no happy endings for him.

"His tenure is actually supposed to be over this month and he was suspended earlier this month because  the man's corrupt."

Suffice to say, Professor Olusola Oyewole will not be missed very much.
