Even as many secondary school leavers keep scrambling for the few admission spots available, some Universities have been turning away eligible candidates and admitting below half their capacity.
Universities Admit Below Half Their Capacity – JAMB Boss
In a nation where students beg to get admission into higher institutions, some Federal Universities have been admitting far below their capacities.
In what will come as a shocker to most, the Registrar, Joint Admissions and matriculations Board, Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde has said most of Nigeria's Federal Universities actually admit less than half their capacity.
He made the revelations on Tuesday at a press briefing on the board’s preparation for Unified Tertiary Institutions Matriculation Examination (UTME) coming up later this month.
Professor Ojerinde, threatened to release the names of the universities operating below capacity to the newspapers if they don't correct the anomaly by admitting students up to their capacities.
The JAMB boss singled out a few universities like the Federal University, Kashere, University of Benin and Federal University, Lokoja, as the few who are operating at full capacity.
He added that only 35% of last year’s 1.7 million applicants secured admission into the universities.
