Parents and peers may influence an admission seeker's choice of course, but in most cases, the decision to determine the course you want to study lies with you.

Before obtaining and filling your Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination forms (UTME) here are three essential things you'll need to consider before choosing that course you have in mind.

1. Career prospects of the course

There's no point in gaining admission into a tertiary institution only because you want to have a BSc in any course. Find out about the career prospect of that course first. Is the course still relevant in the 21st century? If it is not, your certificate would be worthless at the end of your four years in a higher institution.

2. Location of the University to study the course

Your choice of course might not be offered at some of the tertiary institutions you know. You need to know which universities are popular with that course? For instance, if you wish to study a tech-related course, you might need to consider Universities of Technologies in the country.

If your parents or guardians may want you to study at a university that is close to home, you'll need to check institutions that offer the course around your state or city.

3. Cost and entry requirements

Checking the cost and requirement of a course before choosing it is very important. Apart from having five O' level credits, some courses require you to have credits in a certain subject. For instance, it is expected of you in some schools to have Literature-In-English to study Mass Communication.

Also, some courses are more expensive than others. Medical and Engineering students, for instance, in some private universities pay more school fees than their colleagues in other faculties.

Checking these three helps you to make a good decision about your course to study in a polytechnic or university.
