German police have began investigating Andrea Lubitz, the co-pilot who deliberately crashed the Germanwings plane.

BBC reports that his possessions have been seized by the police as they claim to have found a significant clue.

They however ruled out that it was suicide note.

Items seized include boxes and a computer, and said items were confiscated from Lubitz's flat in Duesseldorf and the house the 27-year-old shared with his parents in Montabaur.

Police spokesman Markus Niesczery was quoted as saying.

"We have found something which will now be taken for tests. We cannot say what it is at the moment but it may be a very significant clue to what has happened"

Yesterday, data from the plane's voice recorder suggested that Lubitz had deliberately started a descent while the pilot was locked out of the cockpit, which eventually led to the crash of the plane.

Meanwhile there were also unconfirmed reports in the German media that Lubitz had suffered from depression.

However, German government officials said he was not known to the country's security services.
