Akpabio was born on December 9, 1962 to Late Chief Obot Akpabio and Madam Lucy Obot Akpabio (née Inyangetor) of the Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
He was governor of the state from 2007-2015 and is now the Senator representing the Akwa Ibom North West (Ikot Ekpene) Senatorial District.
He is also the Minority Leader of the Senate.
