Buhari says Red Cross crucial for negotiation with Boko Haram

President Buhari has given a condition for any further negotiation with North-East based insurgents, Boko Haram.

President Muhammadu Buhari leaves Nigeria for Germany on October 13, 2016

In a recent statement by the presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, Buhari made this known while commending the role played by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the release of the 21 abducted Chibok schoolgirls.

“As long as they (Boko Haram) agree to involve international agencies like ICRC. We’ve seen the result of recent talks, 21 of the Chibok girls are back,” the President said

Buhari, who who met with the President of the Red Cross, Peter Maurer, however said the biggest problem was perhaps the issue of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

“There were over 2 million of IDPs, made up of over 60% women and children. About 60% of the children don’t know their parents, or where they come from. It is weighing heavily on government,” the statement noted.

In April 2014, over 200 students were kidnapped by the Boko Haram from their secondary school in Chibok, Borno State while several others were displaced as a result of continued violence.
