2 confirmed cases in Kogi

Austin Ojotule, Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has confirmed two cases of Lassa fever in Kogi state.

The two victims are said to have be diagnosed at the Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo state while 70 year old man from Okene, Kogi state died before the results were out, the other is receiving proper treatments.

NMA in bid to prevent and create awareness for Lassa fever embarked on a sensitization programme in rural areas of the state.

Kennedy Obohwemu, President of the Association of Resident Doctors urged the government to make available required protective equipment and facilities at the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja that could possibly handle victims in the state in case of any outbreak.

Obohwemu added that the refuse heap in Lokoja could aid the breeding of rats carrying the virus.

“The state of refuge disposal in the state, especially as these unhealthy sites serve as breeding grounds for the vectors (rats). Container should be strategically located to ease refuge and other waste disposal,” he said.
