Crazy, exotic and rare fruits that you probably never knew existed.
Jabuticaba or Brazilian grape tree, is strange plant native to the South Eastern parts of Brazil. The plant is so strange that it grows fruits from its trunk. At first, yellowish white flowers will appear all over the trunk and main branches, which will then turn into small fruits. Inside the thick purple skin is the soft gelatinous flesh of the fruit, along with 1 – 4 black seeds. The fruit is sweet to eat and can be made into a wine or liquor, but ferments after 2-3 days off the tree.

Ackee, originally native to West Africa, is a fruit very common in Jamaica. It looks colourful and delicious but is dangerous to eat when unripe. When ripe, the fruits turn yellow-red and burst open by themselves, which indicate that they can be eaten. If one pries it open to eat, he/she becomes a victim of Hypoglycin Poisoning, also known as Jamaican Vomiting Sickness. It is incredibly fatal in as short as a day.
This low calorie fruit can be found in Southeast Asia and around Central America, where it is said to have originated. Inside its scaly exterior is a white expanse of flesh studded with tiny sweet and nutty black seeds. There are two main types of Pitaya, the sour types, typically eaten in the Americas, and sweet types found across Asia.
This fruit looks like a furry strawberry from the outside and has a white gelatinous interior. It can be found across Malaysia and Indonesia. It tastes slightly sweet with a sour tinge. When its seeds are turned into a scrub, Rambutan is great for your skin and is good for your gut when ingested.
Called Miracle Fruit because of its glycoprotein and large miraculin content, these berries are said to be native to West Africa. Miraculin is a sugar substitute, which means the fruit is sweet to taste. However, Miracle fruit does not have a lot sugar content but the glycoprotein binds to the tongues taste buds, which, for about an hour after eating the fruit, distorts any other taste into sweetness. So you could eat a lemon and it tastes like a lollipop. There is no scientific explanation for this phenomenon.
