Designer on how she deals with family, being a creative director

Lisa Folawiyo, is considered a giant of the Nigerian fashion industry. She launched Jewel By Lisa, back in 2005 and she hasn’t slowed down since. Pulse got to chat with the creative pioneer.

Folawiyothat mix traditional West African fabrics with modern tailoring and beaded embellishments. Over the years she has garnered international recognition for their work, including joining the Business of Fashion 500 (BoF) List for 2015.

The former lawyer, wife and mother of two has mastered the art of making traditional African prints appealing to not just Nigerians and Africans but the rest of the world. She has been present in the UK, the US, South Africa and Nigeria itself.

Pulse got to chat with the fashion designer and entrepreneur on how she is able to deal effectively with being a designer, wife, mother and celebrity:

Lisa’s marriage will be 14 years old in April, although she states that she’s known her husband for 21 years, as they met in 1995 and started dating. According to the designer, “I feel like we haven’t been together that long, has it really been 21 years?”

The mother of two also admitted that she ‘honestly don’t feel like I have a celebrity life.” In getting through all of her duties, she explains that “you just do what you have to do...make time for the important things.”

In addition, Folawiyo says she does get a little too passionate about her craft but she does enjoy the pleasures of life and makes time for them. She also makes time to  attend to certain things, make time to live and be there, be attentive at home.

Finally, She advises; “ sometimes I fail miserably but you just get on with it...You have to have a center and focus...my center and focus is God...he gives you grace to juggle it all”
