Billion Dollar Movies: Highest Grossing Movies of All Times (2)

Hollywood movies are known for their mega budgets, unbelieveable stunts and massive following. While some enjoy immeasurable success and launch the careers of their lead characters, others end up crashing out at the box office.

Today, we continue from last week's countdownon the special breed of movies that didn’t just sell out in one country but those that sold out worldwide and went on to cross the billion dollar mark. Check out the list of the highest grossing movies of all times.

11. Toy Story 3 (2010): The first and only animated movie in the billion-dollar club, Toy Story 3 grossed a total of $1,063,171,911 worldwide. The movie which had several Hollywood heavyweights as voice-overs including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Whoopi Goldberg was also the first Pixar movie to be released in IMAX

Movie Trivia: Director, Lee Unkrich and the entire animation team agreed to shave their head before working on the film. The screenplay also took two and half years to write and story board while the movie has a total of 302 characters; Woody the lead character has 229 animation points of movement or avars (animation variables) in his face while Buzz has 215 animation points.

12. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011): The second Pirates of the Caribbean movie in the billion dollar club raked in a total $1,043,871,802. However, it was not so much a critical success and was the first of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series not to be nominated for an Oscar.

Movie Trivia: Lead character, Penelope Cruz was pregnant for most of the production and as the pregnancy advanced, it became more difficult to manage her wardrobe. The crew eventually enlisted the help of her sister, Monica Cruz who filmed the long distance shots for her while Penelope filmed the close up shots. Also, while filming in London in October 2010, Johnny Depp received a letter from a local 9-year old schoolgirl, telling him her classmates needed help to 'mutiny' against her teachers. He turned up with almost no warning at the school in full Sparrow outfit, but advised against mutiny.

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (1999): With a 19-year gap from the last of the original Star Wars movies which spanned from the 70's to the 80's, the anticipation for the Phantom Menace was at a record high with fans reportedly having bought tickets of the movie 'A Bugs Life' just for a chance to see the preview of The Phantom Menace. The anticipation payed off as it grossed $1,027,044,677 worldwide.

Movie Trivia: Natalie Portman (Queen Amidala) missed the premiere party in New York because she had to go home to study for her high school final exams.

13. Alice in Wonderland (2010): The movie which was director, Tim Burton's first billion dollar film grossed $1,024,299,904 at the international box office.

Movie Trivia: Casting auditions for 250 extras were held in the British city of Plymouth on 6th and 7th August 2008. Requirements were for people with a 'Victorian look' and for applicants to have no visible tattoos, piercings or dyed hair.

14. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012): An extension of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the movie raked in a total of $1,017,003,568.

Movie Trivia: The first movie in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings franchise not to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.

15. The Dark Knight (2008): One of the two Batman movies in the billion dollar club, the movie raked in $1,004,558,444.

Movie Trivia: Off-duty Chicago police officers along with officers from Elyria Ohio; Hammond Indiana; Buffalo Grove, Illinois and Joliet, Illinois played Gotham police officer extras.

16. Jurassic Park (1993, 2013 3D Release): After the movie was re-released in 3D this year, the movie got a major boost 20 years after its first release. It reportedly earned $6.3 million in China alone and earned $1,030,000,000 worldwide.

Movie Trivia: Lead actress, Ariana Richards' audition consisted of standing in front of a camera and screaming wildly. Director Steven Spielberg later said that he «wanted to see how she could show fear.» Richards also later said of her audition «I heard later on that Steven had watched a few girls on tape that day and I was the only one who ended up waking his sleeping wife off the couch, and she came running through the hallway to see if the kids were all right.»
