Dokan Sheni reinstated as PLASU VC 10 months after dismissal
Professor Dokan Sheni has been reinstated as the Vice Chancellor of the Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, about 10 months after he was summarily dismissed by the immediate past governor of the state, Jonah Jang.
gathered that the Professor, who lost his job in a controversial move by Jang in October 2014, resumed office on Tuesday after his reinstated by Governor Simon Lalong.
According to a Daily Trust report, Sheni was welcomed by cheering staff and students, some bearing placards with inscriptions condemning Jang and the university's former governing board.
Sheni's return is not unconnected to last week's directive by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The NUC Executive Secretary, Julius Okojie, had given Lalong three weeks to reinstate Sheni.
“Reinstate him because he has not completed his term, appoint a Registrar, Bursar and put the Governing Council in place in three weeks’ time,” Okojie had said.
In what will be seen as respect for constituted authorities, Lalong, who is also the Visitor to the institution, reinstated the VC as directed, two weeks before the deadline.
It will be recalled that Sheni's replacement with Stephen Mallo, a former Rector of the Plateau Polytechnic, has led to protests and criticisms from students and other education stakeholders in the state.
PLASU, a state-owned university established in 2005 by the Joshua Chibi Dariye administration, is yet to graduate any set of student.
Lalong had also indicated that his government will put the necessary infrastructure in place at the university in the next five months.
