Wizkid, Basketmouth, Dbanj, DonJazzy and Parody Trolls

Parody accounts have existed since the beginning of the social media – akin to web-squatting where people register domain names with the hope of selling it in the future.

On social media, several parodies ‘borrow’ the goodwill or otherwise of stars, especially inactive ones, to get social media attention.

On twitter, as far as Nigerian stars are concerned, comedian Basketmouth is perhaps the biggest parody victim.

Though his verified account @basket_mouth is followed about 478,000 after his 2,471 tweets, and following only 2,876 people, he has lost a lot to a rather industrious parody account named 'Bright Okpocha' with the handle @BasketMouth_

Clearly stating 'parody account', @BasketMouth_ has tweeted only 640 times and follows only 10 people but amassed over 226,000 followers!

Yet another parody of Basketmouth, @Basket_Mouth1, which also admits being a parody has a staggering 70,000+ followers, follows only 8 people and has tweeted only 395 times.

One could easily say the parody accounts do better than the ace comedian himself!

Another big loser is super-crooner Wizkid Ayo Balogun whose verified account @wizkidayo has 32,000+ tweets, follows 1,212 people and has 1.05M followers – no 1 in Nigeria.

But a parody account of his, @CLERGYY was able to get 45.8K followers, tweeting 136,000 times and following 15,400 people.

The surprising WizKid parody is @wizkidayo2 that has no tweet at all, follows just one person but managed to get about 40,000 followers. Just like that!

A third parody, @iam_wizkid1, who claimed to be ‘Verified, Original & Official’ but included 'parody account' in the bio has 1,629 tweets, follows about 21,500 people and gathered around 36,200 followers.

The parody trolls also hit on musician, farmer and superstar, Koko Master Dbanj's.

His original account @iamdbanj, is followed by 841,000+ people, and he has tweeted 3,136 times, following 2,453 people.

But his main parody, @dbanj has an impressive 31,500+ followers for tweeting only 3 times and following zilch - no one!

DonJazzy (Michael Collins)' was not left out. His verified account @DONJAZZY is followed by 756,000+ fans, follows 67,000+ people and has tweeted over 50,600 times – arguably one of the most fan-friendly accounts out there.

Interestingly, @DONJAZZYMOHITS, his main parody, has only 1 tweet, follows 1 person but it somehow managed to have 21,000+ followers!

Isn't that impressive? His tweet to follow ratio trumps the original star beyond calculator reasoning!

Anyway, for those who would like to create a parody account after seeing this, I would suggest you take a superstar who is not very active online – and remember to add PARODY!!!
