Covenant University would have taught 'undisciplined' universities how to use TETFund —VC

The VC of Covenant University, Prof Charles Ayo has said Nigerian universities’ failure to access the TETFund despite enormous resources available is due to a culture of indiscipline. He said his institution would have utilised the fund well if private universities were eligible.

Many Nigerian universities are unable to access the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), needed to improve the quality of their graduates, because of the 'culture of indiscipline'.

The Vice Chancellor, Covenant University (CU), Ota, Ogun State, Prof Charles Ayo, said this during a recent press briefing at the institution following the institution's emergence as the number one university in Nigeria and West Africa as well as the 15th best university in Africa according to the 2015 Webometrics Rankings of Universities.

According to a TheGuardian report, Prof Ayo said there is a need for better funding of tertiary institutions in the country in order to improve the quality of education and advance society.

"If we must rewrite the history of Nigerian higher education, if we must improve the quality in higher education, all hands must be on deck.

"Looking at Covenant University, there is 24-hour power supply and unlimited access to Internet. We have massive investments in teaching facilities and currently in the university, we have about five teleconferencing centres," he said.

The Vice Chancellor said it was unfortunate that many public institutions are still unable to access TETFunds.

"Is it not disheartening to note that with the enormity of funds available in TETFund, some universities are not able to access because of the culture of indiscipline?"

He added that Covenant University would have 'taught' the universities how to properly utilize the funds but for the fact that private universities are excluded from the scheme.

"It is a pity that the Federal Government did not involve private universities in the scheme.

"We would have taught them how to utilise such funds for the betterment of our dear country."

Prof Ayo revealed that the institution hopes to be "listed among the top 10 in the world by 2022.”

gathered that the institution is presently at 1401 in the World rankings.

Covenant University is a faith based institution owned by the World Mission Agency (WMA), an arm of Living Faith Church World Wide, also known as Winners Chapel, founded by Dr. David Oyedepo.
