After successfully pushing for renewed relationships between the United States and Cuba through his personal letters to the Presidents of both countries, the Holy Father has invited the Cuban President- Raúl Castro to visit him at the Vatican.
Catholic Pontiff scheduled to meet Cuban President this weekend
The Pope is really doing his best to bring alienated countries into the mainstream of world politics.

According to a Vatican spokesman, Federico Lombardi, the meeting with the Cuban President is not an official state visit, but a private one.
It is estimated that more than half of the Cuban population are Catholics. Hence the close ties that exist between the country and the Vatican.
Two former Popes have visited the country of Cuba on different occasions- St. John Paul II, in 1998 and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, in 2012.
