Ruby Gyang bares determination on ‘Shakara’

On her new tune featuring Ajebutter 22, she asks for her man's affection and demands to be treated with respect.

Ruby dropped ‘Shakara’ on February 17 and I didn’t listen to it. I just assumed it was another R&B slow jam. A week later, she dropped the video, I watched it and I was sorry I didn’t listen to the song earlier.

I remember seeing the singer perform a couple of times at Freedom Hall in Bogobiri and Terra Kulture as far back as 2010/2011. Whenever Ruby took the microphone to perform 'Okay' or any of her other songs, we were all spellbound, the room would be unusually silent and you could literally hear a pin drop. That voice of hers commanded attention. When the recorded version of ‘Okay’ came out, I felt like the singer was holding back her voice and it seemed so on her other tracks that followed.

On ‘Shakara’, she asks for her man's affection and demands to be treated with respect.

“Why you do me shakara, I no do you shakara . . .

“This your own na overdo, you want turn me to mumu. ”

She starts off the song with strong vocals and captures you from the beginning of the song. Her chords are sharp.  Even Ajebutter gives a smooth delivery on the funky soul  beat produced by Chopstix. On the tune I feel like I heard the old Ruby Gyang – raw, fierce and unstoppable. Good-bye Miss sweet and quiet, hello miss bold and passionate.

Her interpretation in the video is symbolic – it seems as though she’s saying look at me, I’m Ruby Gyang and I’m working with new rules. I like the fact she makes it all about her, none of her family members aka label mates make no appearances in this video.

'Shakara' is off her "This is Love" EP. Feeling motivated to listen to it. Watch the music video below:
