US ready to return stolen money to Nigeria

This was disclosed by the Special Representative to Muslim Communities in the US Department of State, Shaarik H. Zafar.

Late Gen. Sani Abacha

This was disclosed by the Special Representative to Muslim Communities in the US Department of State, Shaarik H. Zafar during a meeting with journalists in Kano on Monday, October 17.

“We would be working against our nation if we did not return the stolen money kept in US to Nigerian government. The United States has interest in the development of Nigeria and is committed in helping Nigeria in its ongoing fight against corruption,” he said.

“First of all, such cases must be reported to US government. Secondly, the US’s Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI) department will investigate the matter and thirdly the Justice Department of US will take over the case for prosecution of the people involved.

“I am hopeful that Nigeria could be better up in the few years to come if it succeeds in tackling corruption,” he added.

The US had earlier agreed to return $458million in funds looted by former dictator, Sani Abacha to Nigeria.

The US is said to have seized about $550 million which had been corruptly obtained by Abacha and his associates under its 2013 Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.
