5 Reasons why Nigerians protested against FG [PHOTOS, VIDEO]

Under the scorching sun, they marched from one point to the other on Monday, February 6, 2017.

In Abuja, the protesters converged on the popular Unity Fountain for onward movement to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

At the entrance to the Villa, Chidi Odinkalu, former chairman of the National Human Right Commission read the group's demands to President Buhari and his team.

Here are five reasons the group gave for Monday's protest in Abuja.

1. Transparency

"There has been illegal employment into top positions in some ministries, departments and agencies. The employment process is not transparent as only the children of those in government have access to these jobs.

"IDPs were bombed, we only heard over 200 IDPs were bombed in Rann. They are people, not animals, name them!

"These same IDPs are being abused by officials in camps across the country. The government should investigate and prosecute such individuals."

2. Cost of government

"The cost of governance in Nigeria is too high. How can a country develop when the recurrent expenditure is greater than the capital expenditure?"

3. Corruption

"Nigerians voted for Buhari on the promise that he will fight corruption. Today, corruption has grown worse.

"Babachir Lawal was found guilty of corruption and president Buhari is protecting the interest of the grasscutter. It is sad!

4. Power and darkness

"My very good friend and former Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola promised that six months into the administration, the APC government will provide 24hours electricity. Today we are paying for darkness.

"Four million Nigerians have lost their jobs because of lack of power. Those with business continue to run at a loss because they spend their profits on getting power. Is that how we will get out of the recession?

5. Protect every Nigerian

"Today, the President and his team said they have taken over Sambisa and Boko Haram have been defeated. Yet the people cannot return back to their villages because they are still bombing the areas.

"Our president has never ever spoken to Nigerians. When he wants to talk, he goes abroad. Are we so useless that our president cannot address us? Are we so idiotic that our president cannot tell us that ‘things are hard and these are my plans’?

"Are we so useless that our president cannot invite us and tell us, ‘look, we need your help to get this’? We don’t get compassion, we don’t get empathy, we don’t get thoughtfulness, and there is no plan, and then we are told we cannot protest too? What kind of country is that? What kind of citizens are we?”

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is one that intimidates people. It is a government that just intimidated 2Face. I told the security agencies that were here, we saw this under Jonathan, now we are seeing worse.

Odinkalu further called on President Buhari, his vice, Yemi Osinbajo and their ministers to address the issues that bother on the welfare of Nigerians or "get a Red Card on May 29, 2017."

"We are asking the government to fix energy, fight corruption, that is our demand.

"We want to reiterate that our leaders have failed us. President Buhari and his team have failed to deliver on their campaign promises.

"We are here with a yellow card today, if by the second year of this government on May 29, 2017 things don't get better for the ordinary Nigerian on the street, we will converge here to give this government a red card," he added.
