Police IG denies torture allegations [VIDEO]

Police IG, Ibrahim Idris has denied an Amnesty International (AI) report accusing the Nigerian police of torture.

Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris

The AI report alleged that a special unit of the police force had formed the habit of torturing detainees as a means of extracting confessions and lucrative bribes.

“Nigeria Police Force condemns in all its entity every element of torture in the conduct of police operations in this country. And we have units on the ground to check some of these excesses,” Idris said during an interview with Al Jazeera.

“I can assure you that in the Nigeria Police Force, we have all units. Every unit has codes of conduct, which is distributed among the officers. And we have the units that check the excesses of our officers.

“I can assure you that the Nigeria Police Force has never ever been involved in any element of torture in all its activities in the cause of their investigation all over the country.

“In reality, some of the allegations by the Amnesty International highlighted in their report, we investigated them thoroughly and came to a very definite conclusion that some of these allegations are false,” he added.

The group has frequently accused Nigeria’s security agents of human rights abuses, a claim which they have vehemently denied.
