Is the sequel better than the original?

One of the things about a sequel is that people will pitch it against its predecessor in a battle of “which movie is better.”

The Wedding Party was insanely successful. It kept cinema halls packed for months and it holds the record of the most successful Nollywood movie at the box office.

The resounding success of the movie most likely motivated the producers to embark on a sequel.

TWP 2 sticks to a winning formula, a romance story surrounded by slapstick comedy and over the top scenes. Why change a winning formula right? The movie sticks to the same cast of veterans and fresh-faced Nollywood actors. To ensure success at all costs, the movie features cameo appearances from popular faces in Nigeria’s comedy scene.

Does TWP 2 hold up to its history-making predecessor? Yes, and in terms of a love story, it has an edge over it. In the first instalment of the franchise, Banky W and Adesua Etomi’s love story played second fiddle to the comical sequence of events. In this new flick, the love story of the Banky W’s brother and Adesua Etomi’s British maid of honour is central to the plot.

Overall is The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai better than the original? No. And this is because you don’t pit two movies from the same franchise against each other. If you don’t compare Fast & Furious 8 to a previous sequel to the franchise then you shouldn’t do so with the two TWP movies.

They are two separate movies and should be viewed as such. The key thing is to enjoy both movies. It is a guarantee that you will laugh watching The Wedding Party 2 and that is all that truly matters.
