Toolz should have owned her narrative

OAP Tolu 'Toolz' Oniru could have uploaded the photos of her at C&S on her Instagram page and stopped the trolls.

Toolz & husband, Tunde Demuren

Now while at the church a couple photos of Tunde and Toolz Demuren were taken during their thanksgiving. These photos found its way to an obscure blog before appearing on Instablog 9ja- the popular Nigerian pop Instagram page.

Trolls did not spare Toolz as they attacked for not putting up pictures of her at C&S on her Instagram page. This led to an insinuation that she was not proud of her husband’s family church. Others questioned why Toolz would be in a white garment church. This last line of reasoning is quite baffling. What is wrong with attending white-garment churches?

Of course everything in Nigeria has to do with symbolism. Pentecostal churches are regarded as cathedrals for the hip and cool and white garment churches are viewed as for the poor and razz. This is line of thinking is skewed at best.

A lot of rich families go to white garment churches and I know people who trek from their homes to shiny pentecostal churches every Sunday. Unfortunately, Nigerians rate things with a materialistic mindset.

Now moving to Toolz. This little dust that has been kicked up because she was at a white garment church could have been avoided if she had just owned her narrative.

She should have shared photos of her with her husband at C&S before it landed on any blog or site. Toolz should have shared the photos with a cheeky or funny caption to turn the joke on her. If she had done this nothing or little would have been said. There won’t have been any avenue for trolls to make so many silly comments. Sometimes the solution to trolls is owning your story before any blog can twist it into something unfavourable.

When you allow anyone to tell your story you are inadvertently opening yourself up for unnecessary scrutiny and bashing from people on the cold streets of social media.

This goes beyond celebrities. When you own your own story or tale no one can use it against you. All Toolz should have done was to have taken photos of her in the C&S church and shared them. End of drama.
