I wanted a baby so badly, I almost fell for dangerous ‘miracles’

A Canada-based Nigerian woman, popularly known as LifeOfSjay, has sparked conversations online after opening up about what she described as the dark and painful reality many women battling childlessness face in Nigeria.

In a video shared online, she recounted several disturbing experiences she said she encountered while desperately searching for a child, claiming that her vulnerability exposed her to exploitation by people she trusted.

According to her, everyone around her knew she had been married for years without children, and almost everyone came with different "solutions."

"I wanted a child so badly that I accidentally discovered a world, a very dark world in Nigeria. When women are desperate to have babies, there are people who are willing to take advantage of that. I know this because I was one of those desperate women."

She explained that one of the recommendations led her to a pastor in Abuja who allegedly claimed that "marine spirits" were responsible for her inability to conceive.

The woman said after sending him money, the pastor instructed her to carry out unusual spiritual rituals.

"He said I need to go to the market and look for a snail that was sleeping. I should rub it all over my body, do dry fasting and then go outside naked at midnight to pray."

LifeOfSjay admitted that she followed the instructions because she was desperate for a child.

"I bought the snail and did everything he asked. I went outside naked to pray. But when I came back inside, I felt so stupid and thought, 'What kind of nonsense is this?' I stopped after that."

She also claimed that another woman battling infertility told her a pastor allegedly instructed her to strip naked inside his church before bathing her as part of a spiritual exercise meant to help her conceive.

According to her, desperation often clouds judgment and makes vulnerable women easy targets.

"Desperation is a very dangerous place to be because people know exactly how vulnerable you are. They can use that vulnerability against you because they know exactly what to tell you."

Beyond the spiritual exploitation she described, LifeOfSjay made another serious allegation involving the illegal sale of newborn babies.

She claimed someone once introduced her to what was presented as an adoption arrangement in Port Harcourt, where she was allegedly told she could pay ₦4 million and receive a baby immediately after birth without seeing the biological mother or completing any legal adoption process.

"Immediately the woman gives birth, they will carry the baby and give to you and you have to leave the hospital immediately."

She questioned the legality of the arrangement after asking about adoption documents.

The content creator said she later explored another adoption process, where she was allegedly asked to pay ₦1.2 million for a baby after being shown photographs. However, she became suspicious when she repeatedly requested legal documentation.

According to her, officials kept delaying the paperwork and gave conflicting explanations about how the baby would be transported across states.

She eventually pulled out of the arrangement after receiving information that raised more concerns.

LifeOfSjay said her experience exposed what she believes is a hidden world where vulnerable women searching for children can become victims of exploitation.

She also spoke about the social stigma surrounding childlessness in Nigeria, saying some women are excluded from family events, including children's birthday parties, because they do not have children of their own.

"Nigeria can be very cruel to women who are looking for children."

Her account has since generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians discussing infertility stigma, unethical religious practices, and the need for safer, legally recognised adoption processes.

It is important to note that her claims about pastors, hospitals and the alleged sale of babies are personal allegations based on her account and have not been independently verified. Nigerian law provides a legal adoption process through the appropriate government authorities, and any allegation of child trafficking or illegal adoption would require investigation by law enforcement agencies.
