New York City hosted fashion’s most anticipated event—the 2025 Met Gala on Monday night.
Celebrities, designers, and cultural icons gathered on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to pay tribute to Black excellence in fashion. The theme of this year's Met Gala was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, which explores the history of Black dandyism and the evolution of tailored fashion through the lens of Black identity and influence.

What is Black Dandyism?
Black dandyism is a fashion revolution, a movement steeped in history, resistance, and pride, and often described as a style. The original dandy was famously embodied by figures like Beau Brummell in 18th-century Britain. He was a man whose primary purpose was to stand out by being impeccably groomed and dressed.
Brummell revolutionised fashion by elevating personal style to an art form. He rejected the flamboyance of past aristocratic dress, favouring understated, sharp tailoring that emphasised refinement over ostentation.
For the dandy, fashion was a vehicle for both self-expression and a subtle form of rebellion against societal norms. And that rebellious streak is just as present in Black dandyism. In a world where Black people have been marginalised, the dandy became a figure who defied the rigid categories of race and class that sought to confine them.
Now that you understand what black dandyism means, what the celebrities wore would make more sense to you. This year’s theme focuses solely on menswear and, more notably, it was the first-ever gala dress code built around menswear for all attendees, challenging designers to creatively reinterpret traditional tailoring for both male and female clients.
