A Washington Post report published Monday contradicted comments made last month by one of the attorneys representing President Donald Trump in the Russia investigation.

The attorney, Jay Sekulow, previously said Trump had nothing to do with a statement his son Donald Trump Jr. released to answer questions about a 2016 campaign-trail meeting he had with a Kremlin-linked Russian lawyer.
The Post on Monday, however, reported that the president was actually behind the statement, which was quickly found to be misleading.
Sekulow told news outlets in July that the president "didn't sign off on anything" and "wasn't involved" in drafting the first statement Trump Jr. used to defend his meeting with the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya. The initial statement said only that the meeting centered on Russian adoptions.

It was revealed over several days, however, that Trump Jr. accepted the meeting on the premise that he would receive damaging information about Hillary Clinton that an email suggested was "part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump."
