Trump is reportedly being investigated for obstruction of justice — here's what that is

Obstruction of justice is defined quite broadly: it involves any conduct in which a person is willfully interfering with the administration of justice.

The FBI's investigation into Russian election interference has expanded to include whether President Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

After earlier reports had indicated that Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to close the agency's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, some lawmakers and legal experts said if the reports are true, Trump may have committed obstruction of justice, an impeachable offense.

Jeffrey Toobin, a journalist and former federal prosecutor, told CNN last month that his response to the report of Trump's conversation with Comey was "three words: obstruction of justice."

The White House noted in a statement last month that FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe testified that "there has been no effort to impede our investigation to date.” McCabe was referring to the agency's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.
