Customs cuts inspection hour, achieve 75% process automation

The Nigerian Customs has achieved 75 per cent automation of its process while reducing dramatically the number of hours spent on inspection of imported items and paper processing at various points of entry in Nigeria.

Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller General Hameed Ali

Mr Hameed Ali (Rtd), the Comptroller General of Customs, disclosed this during the on-going three-day 1st Extra-ordinary Meeting of African Union of Directors-General of Customs in Abuja.

The event started on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

Mr Hameed noted that the NCS has achieved 75 per cent automation of its process while reducing dramatically the number of hours spent on inspection of imported items and paper processing at various points of entry in Nigeria.

“If you have been following the trend of Ease of Doing Business initiated by the Vice President, the Customs is key to that. We have reduced the hours of inspection and physical examination; we have also reduced paper processing from 17 to 10.”

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari set up the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) to introduce reforms and change some of the ways government business and operations are conducted in the country.

Last week, the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo signed three executive order centred on improving the ease of doing business in the country.

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun stated while declaring the meeting open that the government is concerned about the high level of illicit financial flows within the region.

Mrs Adeosun charged the participants to deliberate on how to effectively boost border security, improve revenue collection and enhance intra-region trade in Africa.
