We can't wait for these buses to be off the roads

After so many years on Lagos roads, the city is ready to do away with the iconic yellow and black buses popularly known as danfos.

A danfo bus conductor

"When I wake up in the morning and see all these yellow buses and see Okada and all kinds of tricycles and then we claim we are a mega city, that is not true and we must first acknowledge that that is a faulty connectivity that we are running," said the fashionable Governor at 14th annual lecture of the Centre for Values in Leadership.

Lagosians must have been elated with this news. For years, we Gidi dwellers have had to deal with the menace of danfos and conductors with grating vocals.

The emergence of BRT buses in 2008 has made Lagosians even detest danfos more. Danfo is a symbol of everything that is wrong with this dear city of ours- crowded, mismanaged, and unruly.

If you are a Lagosian you must have experienced some of these things, if not all of them.

Preaching in danfos is one of the worst things about the commercial buses. An expression of one's faith shouldn't be done in public. People get take the bus to move from one place to another. They do not want to be bothered by verses or scriptures. Preaching in a public bus is unfair to other passengers especially to those of other faiths.

Most times when you want to sleep inside a danfo, someone blurts "My fellow brother and sisters" and your sleep is ruined.

Drunk drivers and mad conductors go hand in hand. We all have entered a danfo from hell where the driver is high on cheap, homemade spirits and the conductor is a Yaba Left escapee bent on not giving you your change.

Apart from drunk drivers and mad conductors, space in danfos is another source of grief to passengers. Danfos operators do not care if passengers are uncomfortable. Their main objective is to get the most amount of people crammed into a tiny space.

Let's not even get started with bad seats, non-functional seat belts amongst other things.

The only thing cool about danfos is the iconic yellow colour with the black stripe which has been the colour code of Lagos transportation for many years.

Before private taxis and Uber, Lagos taxis were yellow with black stripes. Molues, the bigger brother of danfos also had the same colour before they were fazed out.

Governor Ambode has not explained how danfos will be scrapped and when the new transportation will come in place. While we wait for the new buses, we still have to be dragging change with Muftau.
