Kenya launches new currencies with features that make them accessible to visually impaired people

The new coins bear the images of animals - in compliant with the 2010 Constitution and available in units of Sh1, Sh5, Sh10 and Sh20.

President Uhuru Kenyatta officially unveiled the currency on Tuesday at the CBK headquarters.

According to reports, the 2010 Constitution prohibits the use of portraits or images of individuals on currency as it should only bear images that depict or symbolise an aspect of Kenya

On its official Twitter handle on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), tweeted that the new currencies will begin to circulate today.

The monetary authority says the new currency was issued in line with constitutional requirements through a Kenya Gazette notice.
