Nitiwul justifies Blakk Rasta, et al’s summon to parliament

Reactions from a section of the public suggested that it was trivial for the legislative body to summon individuals who chastise their works.

Dominic Nitiwul, Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament has said that it is out of ignorance that people will label parliament’s summon of individuals who bring the name of the legislative body into disrepute as trivial.

Former Hitz FM’s presenter, Blakk Rasta was summoned by parliament following his comments which suggested that about 80% of Members of Parliament (MPs) smoke marijuana.

Lecturer at the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Ghana, Professor Alex Dodoo, also honoured an invitation to the House’s Privileges Committee which dragged him to explain his comments that the handling of the news of an Ebola vaccine trial in Ghana by Members of Parliament was clothed with ignorance.

But speaking to Kasapa FM’s Maame Broni, Mr Nitiwul said parliament has no intention of indicting anyone, but it has a moral duty to set standards for people to follow.

“There is nothing more serious than people deliberately trying to run down state institutions like parliament and the court. It is the worst thing one can do to any democracy.

“Parliament has a moral duty to set standards for people who can influence society to be punished to serve as a deterrent to others.

“When someone denigrates a state institution like parliament and the outfit does not sit to correct it, there will be a day a president can dissolve parliament and nothing can be done,” he said.
