The leader of the Shiite Islamic sect in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky has reportedly been imprisoned on the orders of a Kaduna Magistrate Court.

El-Zakzaky was arrested by the Nigerian Army after some of his followers allegedly attempted to assassinate Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Burataion December 12.

The situation escalated after soldiers surrounded the Shiite leader's home and allegedly gunned down many members of the sect.

Human rights activists have condemned the attacks and called for a probe even as the Shiites claim that about a thousand members of the group were killed.
