Kolomental: Lagos orders psychiatric tests for 18 'One-Way' drivers
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced that 18 drivers recently arrested for driving against traffic will undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluation.
In a statement released on Tuesday, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, said the directive was issued by the Lagos State Government as part of efforts to curb one-way violations across the state.
According to the agency, the move is aimed at addressing the rising number of traffic offenders who pose a danger to themselves and other road users.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, said the state has finalised arrangements to prosecute the arrested drivers and will include psychiatric testing as part of the legal process.
“In a strategic effort to curb the menace of one-way traffic violations in Lagos, the Lagos State Government has directed LASTMA to ensure that the 18 motorists apprehended for brazenly driving against traffic flow undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluation,” the statement read.
“This directive is part of a multi-faceted approach to restore road discipline, ensure public safety, and maintain order on Lagos roads.”
Bakare-Oki added that the testing aligns with global best practices in traffic law enforcement and behavioural assessment. He said the initiative is both corrective and preventive in nature.
He also noted that despite ongoing public sensitisation, many drivers continue to violate traffic laws, contributing to accidents, road damage, and congestion.
The agency reiterated its commitment to enforcing all traffic regulations in the interest of public safety.
