Bassey was red-carded just 16 minutes into his Ajax debut after the Nigerian international came on as a 62nd-minute substitute in Saturday's Johan Cruyff Shield encounter with PSV Eindhoven.

The 22-year-old would be hoping to bounce back with the Dutch Eredivisie side after completing a £22m transfer from Scottish side Rangers this summer.

Muhren said: "Although Calvin Bassey was sent off, in his short time on the pitch I saw encouraging sights. He organises and points, which is a good sign."

The Ajax legend also suggested that Bassey already has the Ajax DNA, being comfortable with playing with the ball at his feet as well as being strong on the ground and sound in the air.

"He shows that he dares to play football and that is what Ajax is asking. He is physically strong and I suspect good in the air too," Muhren concluded.

On a personal note, Bassey was selected for the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership Team of the Year and the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League Team of the Year.
