16-yr-old faces life imprisonment for raping neighbour’s 2-yr-old baby

A teenager who is accused of raping a two-year-old girl, Azeez Ganiyu, may be handed a life jail term if convicted of the offence.

The 16-year-old was on Tuesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for child rape.

According to the Prosecutor, Soji Ojaokomo, the accused raped the child on the April 16 at at Ijora Badia area of Lagos where they both reside.

Ganiyu allegedly lured his victim into an uncompleted building where he defiled her.

“Ganiyu took the girl to an uncompleted building beside the house and defiled her," Ojaokomo told the court.

“Her mother started looking for her child on her return and she asked her neighbour, who said she left the girl to play outside with other children.

“The mother said while she was searching for her child, she heard her screaming from an uncompleted building beside the house.

“When she got there, she saw Ganiyu satisfying his carnal desires with the child,” he said.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 which prescribes life imprisonment for defilement of a minor.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Presiding Magistrate, Patrick Adekomaiya, granted him bail in the sum N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to the 5th of May.

He also ordered that the case file should be forwarded to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
